Last week we got the privilege of being a part of the ‘Shoppers Drugmart Weekend to End Women’s Cancers’ by recording a Voice over for one a radio commercial that will air across Canada to raise awareness for the event. We were honoured to have Julie Gauvin, the voice talent who shared her story of defeating breast cancer in the fall of 2008.
The Recording Session
It was the first time for Julie in a recording studio but it didn’t take much time to get her settled in and show her what she will be doing.
Important tip: Always make sure the voice over artist is comfortable with the position and height of the microphone and mic stand because if their head is tilted back or front it can affect how they sound.
I chose to use a Rode K2 tube microphone for its warmth and expression, and I think for its relatively low price, it is definitely a decent microphone. Set to cardioid with a pop filter and positioned approximately 6 inches away from her mouth.
Like anyone who records in a studio for the first time, the first few takes were long and choppy but sure enough after the 5th take, you could hear the confidence in her voice. I was a challenge to fit the 9 line script in 30 seconds at first but after a few tweaks it worked out perfectly!
